SOFTNESS AS A MODE OF ACTION
Jean-Moulin High School, Uckange, France
From February to June 2001, Massinon participated in an art residency in Jean-Moulin High School, Uckange.
Two classes of teenage pupils put together an art production based on a proposal of the artist and the art teacher. Using objects from everyday life (such as the supermarket, clothing…), the pupils created an ensemble of bi- and tri-dimensional objects. Connected to an art which is rooted in daily life, the artist attempted to sensitize the pupils to the potential contained within these objects and these activities usually considered banal and outside the realm of what is regarded as art. Notions of disappropriation and representation of the object was the starting point for many of the pupils in their work. Through pedagogical progression alternating with practical artwork, analysis of the works and artistic references, the artist endeavours to indicate the significance of meaning and choice in the artistic process.

Beginning with the notion of Softness, the artist created and presented a series of works, combining his taste for diversified plastic techniques using installation and painting for the Transit Gallery in the High School.
Using paintings, toys, piles of feathers, lights, the artist seeks out and considers the public to be an active element in his production. Through dialogue and working with the artist, the pupils in the school were sensitized to the artistic process and were enabled to lend a meaning to the presentation of their artworks. Something they were unused to doing.
