Inkjet on vinyl on wood
Frac Lorraine Summer 2005

28 May - 28 August 05
This exhibition is sure to take you out of the routine with
something exotic as it explores Switzerland and the Swiss
mountains in people's imagination! Quand les
latitudes deviennent suisses(When Latitudes become Swiss)
focuses on a questioning of the ideal view of the mountain
and its landscape. Underlining the natural / artificial
relationship, the installations and works contribute to the
deconstruction of one idea of the
sublime, although it is something we are really on the loo-
kout for.
In the Europe of mass culture and the holiday industry, the
Swiss way is reduced to putting its mountains to petty mer-
cenary uses. How can we dream of pristine
countryside and an unspoiled community in packed trains and
saturated skiing resorts in a country noted chiefly for its
banks and life insurance firms?
Stamped with the imaginary view of the mountains and of
Switzerland, the items on show - from the reconstructed
landscape to the myth of mountain peaks and the figure of
Heidi - will be inviting us to share an ironic,
critical and sometimes kitsch view of this example of the
sublime that comes down to us from German Romanticism.
