New exhibition of contemporary art by Dexia BIL

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Dexia Banque Internationale à Luxembourg has devised an ambitious cultural programme one of whose central events is the exhibition My Home Is My Castle.
As a prelude to the imminent opening of the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), and with only a few months to go before the official launch of “Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007”, Dexia BIL and the Fondation Indépendance have asked the Luxembourg-born curator Alex Reding to devise an international exhibition of contemporary art for its Galerie l’Indépendance and the Park Heintz.
Under the evocative title My Home Is My Castle, this exhibition showcases work by 26 artists from Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and France, who have explored the metaphor of the “home” and revealed its manifold aspects: notions of shelter and protection but also, the opposite notions of withdrawal into the self and alienation. Since the majority of works have been conceived specifically for the purpose of this exhibition, they fit perfectly into the context of the gallery and the park, forming a dynamic circuit that combines intellectual and sensory experiences.
Among other things, the curator’s selection of artists highlights the parallel existence of different schools and generations. The resulting juxtaposition of various aesthetics and approaches makes for a lively exhibition that questions viewers’ own perceptions of home.
In the coming five months, visitors to the gallery and the adjacent park will thus discover a sample of artistic practice in Luxembourg and neighbouring countries in an exhibition that is exceptional in both the quality and the scope of its contributions.
With more than 30 works on display, My Home Is My Castle is a major artistic event, continuing the series of international exhibitions hosted by Dexia BIL in the context of its ambitious cultural sponsorship policy.
My Home Is My Castle, at the Galerie l’Indépendance and in the Dexia BIL Parc Heintz, 69 route d’Esch à Luxembourg, every working day from 8.00 to 18.00 from 1 June to 27 October.

• For My Home Is My Castle, JeanChristophe Massinon, whose wide-ranging iconographic repertory is based on graphic design, publicity and ideograms, produced a massive rendering of underwear, which stands at the far end of the park's central alley. Lyrically entitled Adam and Eve, Massinon's sculpture made of welded sheet metal coated with shiny lacquer - not unlike a giant marketing gadget - is a stylised rendering of an eminently familiar object. With unambiguous irony, this over-size three-dimensional pictogram of a pair of underpants refers to the notion of intimacy, which is generally linked to the idea of "home". [...] Incidentally, some visitors might read this incongruous object like a humorously irreverent allusion to Mr and Mrs Heintz, the former owners of the park who had planned to construct a villa on its premises.

My Home Is My Castle – Nouvelle exposition d’art contemporain de Dexia BIL

Pour fêter ses 150 ans d’existence, Dexia Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (Dexia BIL) a imaginé un programme culturel audacieux, dont l’exposition My Home Is My Castle est un des événements phares.
En prélude à l’inauguration prochaine du Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), et à l’aube de « Luxembourg et Grande Région, Capitale européenne de la Culture 2007 », Dexia BIL et la Fondation Indépendance ont chargé le commissaire luxembourgeois Alex Reding de concevoir une exposition internationale d’artistes contemporains.
Sous un titre évocateur à plus d’un égard, My Home Is My Castle réunit les positions de 26 artistes venus du Luxembourg, d’Allemagne, de Belgique et de France, qui se sont penchés sur la métaphore du « chez soi » pour en révéler les multiples facettes : notions de recueillement et de sécurité, mais aussi, à l’opposé du spectre des émotions, l’idée du repli sur soi et de l’aliénation.
La plupart des œuvres ayant été spécialement conçues pour cette occasion, elles s’insèrent parfaitement dans le contexte de la Galerie l’Indépendance et du Parc Heintz, composant un parcours d’exposition dynamique qui multiplie les expériences intellectuelles et sensorielles.
Dans la sélection des artistes, le commissaire a par ailleurs réussi à démontrer l’existence parallèle d’écoles et de générations différentes, la juxtaposition d’esthétiques et d’approches variées étant le garant d’une exposition vivante de bout en bout, dont les questionnements multiples ne manqueront d’interpeller le spectateur.
Pour une durée de près de cinq mois, les visiteurs de la galerie et du parc attenant pourront ainsi découvrir un échantillon, exceptionnel tant par la qualité que par l’ampleur des contributions, de la création artistique au Luxembourg et dans les pays voisins.
Avec plus d’une trentaine d’œuvres, My Home Is My Castle s’affirme comme un événement d’envergure perpétuant la série d’expositions internationales que Dexia BIL accueille dans le cadre de son ambitieuse politique de mécénat culturel.

• Pour My Home Is My Castle, JeanChristophe Massinon, qui a construit un répertoire iconographique basé sur le graphisme, le design, la publicité et les idéogrammes, a produit un couple de sous-vêtements surdimensionné qu'il expose au fond de l'allée centrale du Parc Heintz. Lyriquement intitulée Adam et Eve, sa sculpture en tôle recouverte d'une laque reluisante, à l'instar d'une borne marketing, est une représentation stylisée d'un produit éminemment familier. En empruntant un détour  par la dérision, ce pictogramme géant et en trois dimensions de deux slips renvoie à l'intimité de chacun d'entre nous, notion par ailleurs ancrée dans l'idée du chez soi. [...] Certains verront par ailleurs dans cet objet incongru un clin d'œil irrévérencieux au couple Heintz, maître d'ouvrage de la villa inachevée.
